Hello, I am trying to work on a project on both a yosemite OS X and el Capitan. The project works fine on Yosemite (the hard drive is read/write) but for whatever reason it is read only on el Capitan. I tried to verify in disk utilities but apparently that option is now gone. Any help is greatly appreciated as it is a big project and I am not able to reformat or erase the hard drive to reset it at this point. Thank you!
If the drive is formatted as NTFS, you need to install a product capable of writing to that format which is compatible with El Capitan. Older versions of those products aren't.
If the drive uses a different format, choose the First Aid function.

Thank you! It is formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled). If I run First Aid will it erase anything?
Not unless a problem occurs. Back your data up first.

It is backed up but I am working on a time restraint so I'm trying to avoid having to go the route of reformatting and then putting on the footage back on the external drive. From your experience is it possible that if the external hard drive is read only and I run first aid that, that alone would make it read/write and usable on both el Capitan and Yosemite?
If the Disk Utility is able to fix the issue, yes. If not, no.

Okay and then if it needs to "repair" that is when it will erase/format the hard drive?
Not unless a further problem occurs. You should still have a backup.
